kempt for researchers

Your reading pile grows. Your draft doesn't.

Kempt links the paper you read today straight into the chapter you owe next month. Plain Markdown on your disk, free, no account, Obsidian-compatible.

Free forever. No account needed. Your files stay on your disk.

Today · a view, not a file
Today every area, one list

Each row is its own .md file. Check one here and status: done is written into that file, so Board, Calendar, and Timeline show it too.

Three hats. One workspace.

Follow one Tuesday through Kempt, scene by scene. The screens are the app itself, on demo data.

Morning triage becomes real tasks

The advisor's revision, seminar prep, grant admin. Each captured line becomes its own Markdown file with date and priority in the frontmatter, like the one on screen.

The note that keeps its receipts

One literature note per paper, its key claim wikilinked straight into chapter 4. The backlink panel quotes the exact sentence doing the citing.

Tuesday

Client day. The Hana Studio invoice is set for the 25th: they pay net-30, so that is the day it goes out.

Still need a booth time for the School festival, and the side-project launch page is close.

Last night's braindump is already real tasks, each its own file in Today. This note just keeps the context.

The reading pile becomes a map

The graph draws six months of reading as hundreds of linked notes, clustered and colored by life area. One glance says which literature belongs to which life.

November, seen from every angle

Typing 'friday send section 4 to advisor p1' files a dated task beside the November submission. Today, Calendar, Board, Timeline, and Project Map read the same file, so ticking it once settles it everywhere.

Shape it in one evening.

Areas are the few lives you run. Not one per paper. The dissertation is a project inside Research. So is each paper and grant. New paper, new project.

Workspace · areas hold projects
Research area
  • Defend next spring goal
  • Dissertation project
  • Attention paper project
  • NSF grant renewal project
  • lit/vaswani-2017.md note
Teaching area
  • Fall methods seminar project
  • grading.md note
Personal area
  • Half marathon project

Three areas hold a PhD, a job, and a life. Filter any view by one paper to see only it.

Your first days

  1. Point Kempt at your existing Markdown folder or Obsidian vault. Nothing is converted, and nothing moves.
  2. Write one literature note per paper, then wikilink each citable claim into the chapter it supports.
  3. Type real deadlines in plain words, like 'nov 3 submit revision p1', and start your mornings in Today.

Optional by design

Turn on the AI when the grunt work piles up

Kempt embeds Claude Code, on your own Claude login, with no markup on your AI bill. Ask it to round up every note on your method chapter. Its memory sits in your vault, editable, deletable. Switch it off and everything works the same.

The honest fit

  • You work mostly from a phone or tablet. Native mobile is landing now: tasks, calendar, and notes on the move. Building
  • Dispatch is next: your desktop AI, driven from your phone between seminars. Planned
  • Your lab needs shared boards, comments, and roles. Team collaboration is a deliberate no.

Fair questions

I have years of notes in Obsidian. Do I have to migrate?

No. Kempt reads and writes the same plain Markdown, so open your existing vault in both apps at once. Keep Obsidian wherever it serves you better.

What does it cost?

Everything local is free, no account. The paid part is Sync (beta): end-to-end encrypted on your device, zero-knowledge, from $5 a month with 1 GB and three months of cloud version history.

Will the AI write my paper?

No, and Kempt does not pitch that. It handles the work around the writing: rounding up notes, filing, scheduled tidy-ups. Your own Claude login, no added fee, and the app works fully without it.

Does it replace Zotero?

No. Zotero holds PDFs and generates citations, and Kempt does neither. Kempt holds the thinking and the deadlines, and citekeys paste cleanly into plain text.

The reading never stops. The writing can start anyway.

Open beta for Windows and macOS, signed, everything local free. Put one real deadline on the Timeline tonight.
